Jack Thompson: Righteous political activist or self-serving homophobic asshole?
I am by no means the most accepting person on the planet. I hate emos, old people, old hags, squealy little girls, preps, jocks, goths, and pretty much anything that bothers me in the least. However, I look like a boy scout compared to the bigotry commited by the one and only Jack Thompson.

Like most straight guys, I get a little uncomfortable around gay guys. But I don't let it stop me from being a decent, acceptable human being. Jack Thompson, on the other hand, tried to shut down the Florida Bar Association because they were, as he claims, "conspiring against Thompson's political views with their pro-homosexual policies." For the slow, he tried to shut down Florida's association of lawyers because they refused to discriminate against clients and members based on their sexual preference. Then, as if trying to declare war on the teenage population itself, he is trying to use the legal system to destroy rap music. While I myself am not a fan of rap music, it's still the principal of the crime: he's trying to completely disembowel freedom of speech.

If that weren't enough, he decided to raise hell with video game companies because, as he puts it, "violent video games are causing an epidemic of violent youth," completely disregarding the fact that the violent crime rates have gone down. [Source: US Department of Justice, chart]

Now, I'm no expert on the matter, but wouldn't these obviously biased and hypocritical (respectively) claims set off everyone's bullshit detector? Apparently not. Jack Thompson has amassed an entire coalition of sex-deprived soccer moms who demand that we forfeit our freedoms so they don't have to make the tremendous effort of watching their own kids. Because it's my fault that you were a whore, got knocked up, and had a kid. Why take responsibility for you own actions when you can blame video game developers for all of your problems?

Did your kid stand up to a bully and send him to the hospital? We won't tolerate this kind of violence in your house! Blame it on your kid's video games! Anger problem? Blame Rockstar! ADD? Nintendo! Gay? Bethesda Softworks! Cancer? It must be the work of Square Enix!

You know, eventually you're going to run out of people to blame and you're going to have to accept personal responsibility for your fuckups (up to and including having a kid in the first place) and you can stop supporting a self-serving homophobe.

As for Jack Thompson, he always has been a douchebag and that's not likely to change anytime soon. He's reminiscent of good ol' McCarthy. Now now, I'm sure there was at least 1 real communist rounded up during the McCarthy hearings. After all, probability was in their favor. But if you arrest and destroy the freedoms of thousands and only get a handful of real culprits, can you really justify your actions?

If McCar-I mean, Jack Thompson got cancer and died I would go to his funeral and tap dance on his grave while blasting heavy metal music that I illegally downloaded off the internet and playing Grand Theft Auto on my stolen Game Boy.
